Flashcard Friday: German Christmas Vocabulary

Hello everyone, and happy Friday! We hope that you’ve all enjoyed your week and are ready for the weekend. Here in Germany there’s a definite Christmas spirit in the air. Already many of the local Christmas markets are opening, and everywhere there are lights and Christmas colors. The Christmas markets are a tradition here in Germany, selling their beautiful wooden crafts, lights, baked ginger breads, and of course Glühwein, the traditional German mulled wine served hot and delicious. It’s festive and lovely, and  it’s hard not to feel happy  surrounded by so much holiday spirit!

So we thought that for this week  we would compile a list of German Christmas vocabulary words related to the holiday season.  If you’re interested in German Christmas markets, here is a list of some of the most famous markets in Germany.  But we’d venture to say that no matter where you go, you’re bound to find that each city and market has its own special uniqueness and charm. So here are our words! We hope that wherever you are, that you are getting the chance to do something that you love and that makes you happy. Until next week!

Christmas tree= Weihnachtsbaum

Gingerbread cookie= Lebkuchen

snowflake= Schneeflocke

angel= Engel

candy cane= Zuckerstange

reindeer= Rentier

Santa Claus= Weihnachtsmann

mulled wine= Glühwein

hot chocolate= heiße Schokolade

gift wrapping paper= Geschenkpapier

candle= Kerze
