Let Them Eat Chocolate Torta: A Spanish Cake Flashcard

Happy Friday everyone! We hope that you’ve all had a good week, and are looking forward to the weekend. We’d like to share a special holiday with you, one that we’re sure you’re going to think is a lot of fun. So today’s Friday flashcard is technically not for today, but for tomorrow! You see, January 27th is an especially delicious holiday, and one we just couldn’t pass up. January 27th is Chocolate Cake Day, and we’re REALLY excited to celebrate with a trip to our local bakery.  What a great holiday! In addition to celebrating by eating some chocolate cake, we also decided to indulge by making a chocolate cake Spanish flashcard. In Spanish chocolate cake is “torta de chocolate.” We think it sounds delicious in Spanish and in English!  If you’re not a fan of chocolate cake or of desserts in general, celebrate the day by indulging in something that makes you happy. For us, the day has inspired us to look through our list of Spanish desserts and see if we can find some time to try a new recipe this weekend! Wherever you are and however your’re spending your Saturday, we hope that you’re doing something you love and getting the chance to learn something new. Until next week!

Friday Flashcard: A Spanish Flashcard for Your New Year’s Resolution!

Hello everyone, and happy Friday! Today we have a Spanish flashcard for you that is perfect for the new year. Don’t get us wrong, we love New Year’s Resolutions! The dawning of a new year fills us with energy and motivation, and we start the day on January 1 determined to stick to them. But…more often than not, by this point in the month we’re already starting to feel our resolve slipping. And we know we’re not alone in that! After all, if deciding to say “adios “to our resolution wasn’t common, there wouldn’t be a Ditch New Year’s Resolution Day on January 17, the day by which many of us have already decided to throw in the towel. It is estimated that by February, as many as 80% of us will have decided to forgo continuing with our resolution. But this year, we are determined to stick to our resolutions! Today’s flashcard is a great reminder that you can do anything you set your mind to. The phrase is “Tú puedes,” in Spanish, which means “You can do it,” in English. If learning a new language is your resolution this year, there are many great ways to work practice into your daily life. We’re fans of language labels, labeling items around the house with the word in the target language. We also like finding a great show or series online that we can watch to practice listening. Being entertained makes it feel less like work and more like fun! We’ve also found that setting small and measurable goals of studying 15-20 min a day makes the process seem much less overwhelming, and the goal more feasible. What are some of the ways you stick to your resolutions? No matter where you are, we hope that you enjoy your weekend and are already having tons of success in the new year. If you are struggling with your goals, remember “¡Tú puedes!” Have a great weekend and see you next week!

Rainy Days, días de lluvia- A Rainy Day Spanish Language Flashcard

Hello everyone, and Happy Friday! Here at Winter in Olympus we’re so happy that it’s finally the weekend, and we hope that you will all have a chance during these next few days to get some much needed rest! We’ve mentioned before how rainy it is where we are in Germany, and January is turning out to be no exception. Rain, rain, rain, the rain is constant! But although we can’t be outside as much as we would like, rainy days are a great opportunity to catch up on chores, read a book, try a new activity or curl up with a blanket and a cozy mug (one of our favorite mugs for a cold rainy day). In our house we like to make a little bit of time to review some of our language flashcards and learn some new words. Today’s language flashcard is one that we feel is very relevant for the rainy weather, “la lluvia,” or “the rain” in Spanish. It’s a great vocabulary word that is going to be useful to us in the next few months, as cold winter slowly turns to rainy spring. There are many ways to make the best of rainy days, what are some of your favorites? No matter where you are and what the weather is like, we hope that you are enjoying your Friday and finding a little time to learn something new or to do something you enjoy. Have a very happy weekend!
