The Acorn and “la bellota”

Asset 17

Happy Friday everyone! Hope that you’ve all had a great week. Today’s Friday flashcard is a little guy we’ve been seeing a lot of lately–the acorn, or “la bellota” in Spanish. We like acorns because although they’re small, with a little love and care they can grow up to be big, strong oak trees. We think  teaching a child language is the same thing. Investing a little time into teaching children even a few simple words can kindle an interest that will grow into a lifelong love of language. We hope that wherever you are you’re enjoying the wonderful season. Have a great weekend!

Hello Fall!

Asset 16

Hello everyone, and hello fall! The summer is officially over, and the autumn season has begun. Where did the summer go? Here where we are we’re already feeling a chill in the air and seeing the leaves slowly turning from green to red, orange and yellow…the colors of fall! Here’s a very useful vocabulary word to commemorate the 2017 Autumn Equinox– “秋天” which is Chinese Mandarin for fall. Enjoy the beautiful season everyone, and happy studying!

Moving Day Means Many “cajas” (Boxes)

Asset 13

We recently helped our friends move, and we couldn’t help but be amazed by the amount of work moving really is! So many packing supplies, materials, and trips back and forth to a moving van, it’s definitely exhausting. But among all of the materials that we needed, we found that there was one in particular that was always in short supply…boxes! So in honor of this very critical moving day necessity, here is our Friday vocabulary word. Caja, which means “box” in Spanish. If you’re moving soon, whether it be to a new college dorm, a new apartment, a house, or anywhere else, we hope that you find this word useful. Have a great weekend everyone!

Flea Markets and Flashcards

Asset 11

Hello everyone, and Happy Friday!  For us at Winter in Olympus our weekend began with a trip to the flea market here in Germany. We love the flea market– the rows and rows of treasures waiting to be discovered are a fun way to spend a couple of hours  But being surrounded by so many cool things made us realize how many words we didn’t know! After all, there is nothing like wanting to ask about an item and not remembering what it’s called to help you remember a vocabulary word! So, to hone our flea market shopping skills, here’s a great word for a flea market staple– the lamp, “die Lampe” in German. What other fun things do you like to shop for at the flea market? Here’s to hoping that whatever your favorite item is, that you find it!

Happy Labor Day Weekend!

Asset 9

Hi everyone, and for those of you residing in the United States, Happy Labor Day weekend! As the summer draws to an end for us here, we’re celebrating by cooking our favorite foods on the grill before the weather begins to turn cold. There are a lot of delicious foods that are fantastic on the BBQ, and we’re getting hungry just thinking about it! So in preparation, here is one of the meals we love– a hamburger, or “la hamburgesa” in Spanish. We’ll be grilling some of these this weekend. But if you don’t like hamburgers or have special dietary considerations, there are lots of other yummy foods that taste just as delicious on the grill. Here’s to hoping that you’re celebrating the end of the season with some of your own favorites. Happy relaxing!
